Reports to: General Manager

About the Opportunity
Our client operates a mine site where day to day field monitoring is handled onsite, but program direction, regulatory relationships, and ultimate accountability for environmental performance sit with this role. It's a hybrid position built for someone who knows when remote oversight is enough and when a situation calls for being onsite, whether that's an audit, an incident, or a permit negotiation.

You'll set compliance strategy across multiple state and federal bureaus, supervise an onsite Environmental Superintendent, and represent environmental performance to regulators, leadership, and ownership. Regular travel to site is part of the job, more often during audits, incidents, or permit activity.

What You'll Do
Environmental Compliance Strategy

• Build, run, and continuously improve environmental compliance programs across all applicable federal, state, and local requirements
• Set compliance priorities and site level direction for the Environmental Superintendent between site visits

Regulatory Relationships & Reporting

• Serve as the primary regulatory relationship owner across state and federal environmental bureaus, including water quality, air quality, land management, and hazardous waste and landfill compliance
• Review and approve permit submissions, compliance reports, and regulatory filings prepared onsite before they go out
• Represent our client during higher stakes regulatory audits, agency escalations, and permit negotiations

Team Leadership & Site Oversight

• Directly supervise the Environmental Superintendent, providing coaching, workload direction, and performance management
• Travel onsite as business needs require, at minimum monthly and more often during audits, incidents, permit activity, or when the Superintendent needs hands on support, to audit field practices and review records
• Keep documentation audit ready and maintain consistent coverage between site visits

Risk Management & Incident Response

• Conduct environmental risk assessments and direct corrective action plans
• Lead investigation and resolution of environmental incidents, including regulatory notification decisions
• Oversee International Cyanide Management Code compliance strategy and certification readiness

Training, Culture & Sustainability

• Own the company wide environmental training curriculum, including spill prevention and emergency response protocols
• Build a culture of environmental responsibility and bring sustainability into operational decisions
• Track and report on environmental performance to site and corporate leadership

What You Bring
Education

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
• Advanced degree in an environmental or related discipline is a plus

Experience

• 10+ years of progressive environmental management experience in mining or another heavy industrial, permitted operation, including supervisory or program management experience
• Experience with leach pad reprocessing, heap leach, or mill and processing operations is a plus
• Prior experience serving as the primary regulatory point of contact for a mining or industrial operation is a plus

Key Skills

• Strong working knowledge of environmental regulatory frameworks, including the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act
• Demonstrated ability to manage a direct report in a hybrid arrangement, with sound judgment about when a situation calls for an onsite presence versus remote oversight
• Familiarity with the International Cyanide Management Code or similar chemical management frameworks is a plus
• Ability to travel to and work onsite at a remote mine site as needed

Physical Requirements

• Ability to traverse rugged, uneven mine site terrain, including inclines and unpaved surfaces, while onsite
• Comfortable working in outdoor conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and dust, while onsite
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs
• Comfortable wearing required PPE for extended periods, including respirators when necessary
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to the site as required
