Health & Safety Manager
Reports to: General Manager

About the Opportunity
Our client is building a dedicated Health & Safety department from the ground up, and they need an experienced leader to run it. This is a rare chance to shape a safety program end to end, policies, procedures, training systems, and a culture of proactive risk management across growing, MSHA-regulated operations.

This is a management-level role reporting directly to the General Manager and working alongside the executive leadership team. You'll lead the department and its staff, own MSHA Part 48 compliance, direct incident investigation and root cause analysis, and deliver safety metrics and performance reporting to executive leadership. It's a fit for a hands-on safety leader who's motivated by the chance to build something from day one.

What You'll Do
Program & Policy Development

• Build health and safety policies, programs, and SOP libraries from the ground up, and scale them to new projects and sites as operations expand
• Establish and maintain the department's operating structure, systems, and reporting cadence in coordination with the General Manager

MSHA Compliance & Inspection Readiness

• Own MSHA Part 48 training delivery, tracking, and documentation, and maintain continuous inspection readiness
• Serve as the company's primary point of contact during MSHA inspections, manage citation responses, and see corrective actions through to closure

Incident Management

• Oversee incident investigation and root cause analysis for all safety related events
• Track corrective actions to completion and report trends to executive leadership

Site Risk Management

• Oversee JSA/JHA programs, PPE programs, and heavy equipment safety standards
• Manage site specific hazard controls, including cyanide handling and ADR protocols

Safety Metrics & Reporting

• Own TRIR, near-miss reporting, and leading and lagging indicator tracking
• Deliver regular safety performance reporting to the executive leadership team

What You Bring
Education

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Health, or a related field is a plus

Experience

• 10+ years of safety leadership experience in mining or heavy industrial operations
• Demonstrated experience building or substantially developing a safety program from the ground up
• Experience with various metal mining processing operations is a plus
• Experience managing or mentoring junior safety staff is a plus

Key Skills

• In-depth working knowledge of MSHA Part 48 standards and inspection processes
• Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis skills
• Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) or equivalent safety certification is a plus
• Ability to travel to multiple mine locations

Physical Requirements

• Ability to traverse rugged, uneven mine site terrain, including inclines and unpaved surfaces
• Comfortable working in outdoor conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and dust
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable wearing required PPE for extended periods, including respirators when necessary
• Valid driver's license and ability to operate a 4WD site vehicle
