In this year-end check-in, host Lindsey Schultz welcomes strategist and former mining executive Steve Virtue to unpack a tumultuous yet opportunity-rich 2025 for the global mining sector. Their discussion spans the surge in M&A, a historic gold rally, policy whiplash, labor shortages, and why refining and stakeholder trust—not resources—are today’s real chokepoints.

What’s changed—and why it matters:

– Mining has captured the attention of governments, markets, and the public like never before—driven by defense priorities, supply chain resiliency, and the energy transition. Yet geopolitical volatility has intensified, moving much of mining’s risk profile from inside the fence line to external forces.

– Record dealmaking—about $50B in 2025 across full-company and asset transactions—reflects disciplined growth in gold and a flight to scale and quality. But for those outside gold, silver, and copper, capital remains tight.

– The real bottleneck is processing and refining. With roughly 90% of critical mineral processing still concentrated in China, Western ambitions hinge on rapidly building domestic and allied capacity—something that takes years, not months.

– Permitting timelines remain a brake on investment. From discovery to construction for copper can be decades; investors won’t wait a generation for returns. FAST-41 style accelerators help, but regulatory modernization lags the urgency.

People risk is business risk:

– M&A churn at the site level, talent scarcity, and retirements are colliding. In Canada, mining could be short 250,000 skilled workers by 2034; US mining schools graduate only a few hundred mining engineers per year. Leaders should recruit beyond traditional pools and industries, and invest aggressively in upskilling and retention.

– Ipsos global sentiment data shows employees overwhelmed by cost pressures, conflict, and political polarization. That anxiety shows up as distraction, burnout, accidents, and attrition—requiring more than “pizza-day” fixes. Companies should double down on mental health, flexible work where possible, and human-centric safety.

Policy, alliances, and the gold signal:

– Gold’s run (buoyed by macro uncertainty) underscores mining’s safe-haven role while many critical-minerals funds sag. Meanwhile, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and others are striking new deals (e.g., nuclear fuel security, broader “Team Americas” frameworks) to diversify away from Chinese processing.

– Nationalizations and artisanal mining growth in parts of Africa and elsewhere raise operational and reputational risk; disciplined country exposure and proactive government relations are essential.

Trust is the new currency:

– Compliance alone doesn’t win hearts and minds. Companies must communicate tangible community benefits—local jobs, clean water outcomes, emergency response, and post-closure legacies—alongside production metrics.

– Standards like TSM and tailings frameworks matter, but leaders should aim beyond minimums and consider traceability innovations (e.g., blockchain) where they add credibility with customers and policymakers.

– With traditional media shrinking and stakeholders mobilizing online from afar, mining needs multi-channel storytelling and constant, two-way engagement with communities, regulators, and investors.

2026 and beyond: how leaders build resilience:

– Expect more elections, policy swing, and social tension. Stay close to decision-makers, scenario-plan for regulatory and country risk, localize value as much as possible, and pursue processing partnerships and offtakes that shorten supply chains.

– Modernize the workforce strategy: recruit cross-industry skills, pilot remote operations where feasible, and align HR policies to today’s realities.

Bottom line: Mining’s moment is here—but seizing it requires faster policy, smarter people strategies, credible community value, and relentless engagement across an ever-wider stakeholder map.
