🎙️MRC Recruiting Team
This episode was really about what hiring in mining looks like when the market is active, but the old assumptions no longer hold.
The MRC team kept coming back to one tension: companies say they need people badly, but many are still moving too slowly or hiring as if it were a different market. At the same time, candidates are not making decisions the way they used to. They are not just chasing the biggest salary. They are asking whether the work is interesting, whether the team feels right, whether the company can be trusted, and whether the move makes sense for their family.
That showed up most clearly in the discussion around relocation. For years, moving was just part of mining. Now it is often the first reason people say no. Dual-career households, kids in school, housing costs, low mortgage rates, and general uncertainty have all made relocation a much bigger ask than many employers want to admit. For companies hiring site-based roles, that matters. If relocation is required, they need to understand how serious that barrier is and deal with it early, not halfway through the process.
The team also talked about a quieter shift; people are being more intentional. Candidates are interviewing companies as much as companies are interviewing them. Some are staying put because the familiar feels safer. Others are looking precisely because their current role no longer feels stable. In both cases, the thread underneath is the same; people are trying to make decisions they can live with, not just decisions that look good on paper.
One of the more important parts of the conversation was about international talent. The team sees strong candidates in the US who need sponsorship get screened out automatically, even when companies are struggling to find qualified people. Their point was practical, not ideological. There is more visa flexibility than many employers realize, and in some cases, the process is manageable both in cost and effort. If more projects move forward in the US, especially greenfield work, the industry may not have enough domestic experience to build those teams without looking wider.
The story that carried the most weight was Lindsey’s call with an early-career engineer from India who built a custom presentation for an informal screening call. It was a reminder that talent does not always arrive in the usual packaging, and that effort, adaptability, and grit are easy to miss if you are only hiring from the same familiar pool.
The clearest takeaway is simple. Hiring works better when both sides are more honest earlier. Companies need to be clearer about the role, the team, and what they can actually offer. Candidates need to bring up the hard stuff, money, relocation, family constraints, before the final stage. Most of the friction in hiring does not come from bad intent. It comes from waiting too long to say what is true.
