For the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we feature Amanda Irons, Vice President of Corporate Development at Scout Discoveries Corp., whose passion for geology and determination have led her to a leadership role in the mining industry. Her journey is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the importance of advocating for diversity and inclusion in science and mining.

From Childhood Fascination to a Career in Geology

For Amanda, her love for geology started young. Spending time in her mother’s office, where she worked for a geologist, she was surrounded by minerals and rocks that sparked her fascination. One defining moment came when the geologist gifted her a sapphire and told her, “There’s a lot more where that came from.” That simple but powerful gesture set her on a path toward a career in geoscience.

Encouraged to pursue her passion, Amanda learned about the Colorado School of Mines, where she later studied, turning her early curiosity into a profession that continues to drive her today.

Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry

Mining and mineral exploration have long been male-dominated fields, and Amanda has experienced both support and challenges along the way. While she has worked with many respectful and collaborative colleagues, she has also faced moments where she wasn’t taken seriously, was excluded from key discussions, or dealt with harassment.

Her experience as a new mother added another layer to these challenges. Fearing outdated perceptions that motherhood and career success are mutually exclusive, she initially kept her pregnancy a secret. “The perception is getting better, but it’s still a thing,” Amanda explains.

Despite these obstacles, she has successfully navigated the delicate balance between work and family life. Her daughter is her motivation, and she hopes to inspire the next generation of women—starting with her own child—to believe that they can pursue their ambitions without limitations.

A Changing Industry: Progress in Diversity and Inclusion

While challenges remain, Amanda has seen real progress in the mining industry’s approach to diversity and inclusion. More companies are recognizing the value of diverse leadership and perspectives, and initiatives such as mentorship programs, industry-wide discussions on inclusion, and the increasing representation of women in executive roles provide hope for the future.

Her advice for young women pursuing careers in geoscience and mining?

Set clear goals and go after them with determination. Obstacles will come, but they should never deter you from your vision.
Build a strong network. Mentorship and professional relationships are invaluable in opening doors at every stage of a career.
Believe in yourself. The mining industry needs more women to help shape its future, and there is space for you to succeed.

The Future of Mining: Innovation, Sustainability, and Opportunity

Amanda is excited about the future of mineral exploration and the industry’s rapid evolution. As demand for critical minerals increases, companies, governments, and technology providers are working together to drive innovation and unlock new discoveries. Sustainability is also becoming a priority, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact and improving reclamation efforts.

Her ability to speak multiple languages has been a big asset throughout her career, allowing her to work extensively in Latin America and build strong relationships across borders.

“In mining and exploration, communication across languages and cultures opens doors. It strengthens collaboration in a rapidly globalizing industry.”

Shaping the Future, One Step at a Time

Amanda Irons’ journey from a curious young girl fascinated by minerals to Vice President of Corporate Development at Scout Discoveries Corp. is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and breaking barriers. She continues to be a leader in the mining industry while also paving the way for future generations of women in science.

To young women considering a career in geoscience: “The industry needs your perspective, your ideas, and your leadership. The future of mining is being shaped now—and you have the power to be part of that transformation.”
