In this episode of Ore-atory: Elevating Mining Minds, Lindsey Schultz speaks with Tobi, the visionary founder behind AfriMine, a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing Africa’s next generation of mining professionals. What begins as a discussion about Tobi’s personal passion quickly unfolds into an expansive story about the power of youth, purpose, and community in transforming an industry.
AfriMine is built on three foundational pillars: Tribe Building, Mind Shifting, and Bridge Building. Each represents a strategic approach to empowering young people in mining. Tribe Building centers on fostering a strong, multicultural community across Africa—encouraging collaboration and cultural exchange among peers from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and beyond. Mind Shifting tackles the negative perceptions often associated with mining, using social media and storytelling to reframe it as a critical and beautiful part of modern life. Bridge Building connects emerging professionals with experienced mentors to transfer knowledge, wisdom, and industry insights.
Tobi shares AfriMine’s inspiring origin story, which began during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With in-person opportunities scarce, he launched virtual communities and career events that quickly gained momentum. Today, AfriMine’s Career in Mining series has reached thousands and connected young talent with leaders across the mining value chain. The organization has hosted over 500 students at major industry events like Mining Indaba—demonstrating the massive demand for meaningful engagement and mentorship.
What makes AfriMine stand out is not only its scope but its soul. Tobi emphasizes the “beauty” of mining—an uncommon but intentional word choice. He aims to create a space where everyone, from engineers to lawyers to communicators, can find their place in the industry and be proud of the contribution they make. Through visuals like their career roadmap (adapted from Australia’s AusIMM) and a proactive digital platform, AfriMine is charting a clear path for young professionals—one that’s both accessible and aspirational.
As the episode closes, Tobi reflects on his long-term vision: to one day see AfriMine alumni leading mines, driving policy, and transforming the industry across Africa and the world. His dream? Waking up at 70 and seeing a continent changed—not just by mining, but by the people who were empowered to lead it with purpose.
